35 people enjoy a lively debate about refugees in Bakewell

What actions can we take personally and locally?

What can we do to help?

How can we campaign locally and nationally?

We decided to post ideas, how to help and volunteer on this blog.

We will circulate a briefing sheet from Janet Fuller explaining refugee & asylum seeking status.

Irene Radcliffe will contact Yvette Cooper and continue to work on this within Derbyshire County and Derbyshire Dales authorities.

Migration and refugees - this is a very complicated situation with many causes including securing oil, global warming & conflict.

We discussed how to campaign and having the facts to challenge prejudice.

We need to relate to peoples fears to help them understand the plight of the refugees and what we can do as a country to help.

We started to debate whether we should make safe havens or start bombing. Again there was a range of views and we will return to this topic.

One way that could help would be to organise meet ups to talk English over a coffee with the Asylum seekers and Refugees. That would help them learn English and would help us to understand their stories.
Stories of ‘who these people really are’, their profession, where they came from, their journey, their dreams; will help to counter the people who scaremonger about refugees.
Of course the asylum seekers only get £35 per week so we would have to be prepared to buy them a coffee/tea.

Great meeting. I counted more than 35 people! Several Bakewell Branch members met after the meeting and agreed to meet on the 16th November. Invitation to go out shortly.

I really enjoyed meeting everyone last night and I said I’d provide details of the ASSIST meeting tonight. ASSIST is a voluntary organisation that helps asylum seekers in Sheffield to avoid destitution while their asylum claims are being assessed.
The meeting is at 6.30 pm (until 9 pm) and is in the Moor Theatre Delicatessen, The Moor, Sheffield S1 4PF.
Best wishes,
John
