I have been a member of the Musicians' Union for over forty years, was the Derbys and Notts Branch Secretary (when we still had Branches, but that's another story) and am a serving member of the Union's Midlands Regional Committee. On the 5th August, the Union's Executive Committee took a decision to endorse Owen Smith for Labour leader. This decision was taken without consulting the members.
Consequently, the MU offices have been inundated with emails and phone calls from angry members demanding that the endorsement be withdrawn until the members are balloted for their views; an emergency motion to this effect has been sent to the EC.
The nature of the decision, taken in secret, behind closed doors, by a handful of individuals and presented to the membership as a fait accompli, bears all the hallmarks of the undemocratic and downright dirty campaign being waged by Owen Smith and his right wing Blairite supporters. These shenanigans have brought the MU into disrepute and I am not alone in being ashamed to call myself a member of that Union.
