FLOOD RESCUE NEEDS TO BE STATUTORY & FULLY FUNDED!
I was surprised to learn that there is no statutory duty for Fire & Rescue Services in England & Wales to undertake flood rescues, they just get on with it.
The FBU have been campaigning for years for it to be a made a statutory so it would be properly funded. Any further budget cuts will mean Fire & Rescue Services will find it increasingly difficult to fulfill even their statutory obligations. Voluntary search & rescue teams do a great job but need professional co-ordination.
I saw an opportunity to make a contribution to the campaign by starting a petition, here is the link:
It received a terrific boost from an email sent by Matt Wrack, FBU General Secretary, to all FBU members a couple of months ago but then slowed down - despite the best efforts of myself and friends in Twitter. I'd like to get at least 10,000 signatures needed for a government response, but I'm more than 3,000 short of target with deadline in less than a fortnight.
The good news is that Jeremy Corbyn has committed, if elected as Prime Minister, to rebuild Fire & Rescue Services with a statutory duty for flood rescue. See video.
