Jon Ashworth is the shadow minister without portfolio.
Tackling the Tory Myths
Jon is a very interesting speaker who will help us feel more confident in putting forward our views and being aware of misinformation.
Jonathan Ashworth was elected Member of Parliament for Leicester South at a by-election in May 2011.
In September 2015 the Leader of the Labour Party, Jeremy Corbyn, appointed Jon to the Shadow Cabinet as Shadow Minister without Portfolio.
Jon had previously served on Ed Miliband’s front bench as Shadow Cabinet Office Minister from October 2013. He is also a member of the Labour Party’s National Executive Committee (NEC).
As part of his current Shadow Cabinet role Jon leads on attack and rebuttal, helping to shape Labour’s opposition to the Tory government. He is currently working on a new ‘rebuttal hub’ that will help local Labour parties and activists all over the country hold Tory central and local government to account.
Jon is interested in International affairs and recently undertook trips to Qatar, to meet ministers and officials in charge of workers at the world cup sites, and Canada, where he met colleagues from Trudeau’s ruling Liberal Party.
Previous to being an MP Jon worked in the Treasury as a special advisor to Gordon Brown when he was Chancellor, and continued to work for Gordon Brown when he became Prime Minister.
Outside of politics Jon is a keen book-worm, with a particular interest in historical fiction. He and his wife have two little girls and live in Stoneygate, Leicester.
Jon has sent us several briefing sheets to date - these can be found on our web site blogs:
This is now a social event for all constituency members and supporters. (CLP)
