Reasons to be cheerful - and united

Waking up this morning to great news from Oldham and sunshine across the Dales. Jim McMahon has stormed home with 17,209 votes, 10,000 (yes, ten thousand) more than Ukip, leaving the Tories a poor third with 2,596.

The first parliamentary election since the new leader should give us all a great surge of hope, whether we back jeremy Corbyn or not. The late Michael Meacher was an admirer, the new incumbent reportedly less so, although he did say after the victory 'I think he is actually a very reasonable guy.'

Despite a media narrative of splits within Labour, there is plenty of room for us all to move forward with fertile and not toxic debate. This is a great start to the next four and a half years.

Jim McMahon is a very impressive new MP. I heard him speak a couple of years ago at a meeting in London and he was articulate, clear and right on top of his brief. He’s young but is already the leader of the Labour Group on the LGA. It is a superb result both for him and for the Party.

The Oldham result made my day, both as a Lancashire lad and a Labour Party member. The media seemed so desparate for a different result they were reporting predictions of a labour slump as if it were already fact! Much egg on faces I think! Whilst I don’t think it can be taken on its own as a ringing endorsement of Jeremy’s leadership, it does at least buy him some breathing space to re-group and move forward. I didn’t vote for Jeremy but I think the behaviour of some in the PLP is disgraceful. He was elected democratically and crucially, when the stats are looked at, not primarily due to the £3 voters but due to the members of the Labour Party. MPs need to behave in a more disciplined manner and get behind Jeremy – its the Tories we should be opposing not each other! Well done Jim McMahon – brilliant result!

Delighted with the result – it gives all Labour members and supporters hope for the next election. It is important that we all pull together to fight the Tories and UKIP. This result shows that our positive policies resonate with the public, despite our differences over how to tackle Daesh in Syria. Let’s work together for a Labour future!
