Wirksworth and Masson Branch

At a packed and emotional meeting on Monday night, branch members discussed the referendum result, the labour leadership  and what it all means for the Labour party, and also listened to a talk by Roger Green on the economy.

Brief notes from the meeting are here

We met yesterday evening in Cromford Community Centre and shared the venue with a dog training class!

Irene Ratcliffe explained how Derbyshire County Council was trying to maintain services whilst the central budget is being cut back so drastically.

Many of us went to listen to John McDonnell (Shadow Chancellor) speak in Derby. This was an excellent event which should be repeated quarterly.

Everyone discussed how we were going to engage our communities and we decided to start with a presence/ consultation to coincide with Wirksworth Farmer's Market and a Pub Politics Cafe Discussion group. Other ideas are being explored including music events.

Jan Cole and Pam Butler agreed to chair the Branch.

Lucy Powell will be Branch Secretary.

Mary Wardle will coordinate the community events.

We met at Waltham House in Wirksworth on Friday and discussed our ideas for the new larger branch.

Everyone was very keen to start campaigning and to write letters especially asking the MPs to work for party unity and concentrate their efforts on fighting the Tories.

There were lots of ideas for the branch including holding coffee & cake meetings at different times of day, and talking to local people to help them become more interested in politics.

We will be discussing who can help to run the new combined branch to arrange meetings and events at the next meeting which should be held in Cromford.
