Today, the National Audit Office has found that £10.5 billion of the contracts relating to the pandemic – that’s over half of all the contracts relating to the outbreak were handed out to private companies by the Conservative government without competitive tender.
Suppliers with political connections were also ten times more likely to be awarded contracts by the government.
Earlier this week, it was reported that the government has spent £21 million of taxpayers money to pay a go between to deliver lucrative contracts to the Department of Health. Just a few weeks ago the Boris Johnson couldn’t find this amount of money to feed free school meals for children over half term.
The Conservative government must stop any doubt that their spending during the pandemic, is helping their friends and donors to profit from this hugely difficult time for the rest of us.
Boris Johnson and his government must commit that all government contracts will be now subject to the proper process with full transparency and accountability.
