Letter to the Matlock Mercury on 07/03/2021

Three days after the High Court ruled that the Government had acted unlawfully by failing to publish Covid contracts, Boris Johnson told the House of Commons and the public that all Covid-related contracts were “on the record”.

The final Order handed down by the Judge shows that what Boris Johnson said was not true.  When asked by the Judge to follow up with evidence of the figures so he could make his final Order, it transpired that the Government had only published 3% of CANs within the legal timeframe.  The Government has misled Parliament, the country and submitted false information to the Court.

In the past few days, nurses have been told by the Government that the country cannot afford to award them more than 1% pay award.   This same Government, however, has awarded billions of pounds of tax- payers money for Covid related contracts to companies with links to the Conservative Party and wasted vast sums of money on PPE equipment not fit for purpose.  This same Government has also spent £37 billion, the equivalent of £657 for every man, woman and child in the country, on a track and trace system that has proved to be far short of the world beating system that it was promised to be.

The Government and the Prime Minister appear to be strangers to the truth and accountability. The people they have been elected to serve deserve better.

Yours sincerely

Ed Runham
